The Benevolent Heart

I crawled slowly through fresh green grass. I was looking for something... secretly.

I came upon a small white cabin in the woods. It was surrounded by fruit trees, mostly apple. It was old, but well cared for. It looked as if someone had replaced anything that was ever broken.... there was new wood siding and shingles, and a new stair on the small staircase leading up to the front door. Someone loved it. There was a small garden beside the house that was growing all sorts of fruits, vegetables and herbs. The air was heady with the smell of it all.

It was also hidden..... tucked behind a sea of tall grass. Someone didn't want this place to be found....but there I was peeking at it through the grass. How I came to be there, I do not know for sure.

I see a woman, making her way through the grass, walking steadily on the other side so I could see her perfectly. I felt a tinge of jealousy as I noticed how beautiful she was. She walked up the stairs to the cabin and moved a tiny piece of wood near the door. It looked like some sort of secret cabinet without a latch. She removed a skeleton key and closed the secret cabinet, which blended in perfectly with the siding of the house. She put the key in the keyhole, turned it, and opened the door. I needed to know why she was there.

My curiosity got the best of me and I slowly stood up from the grass and went to a window at the side of the house. I peeked in and could see that there were several people there..... men, women, and children, all doing housework. Some were doing mundane tasks like washing dishes and making dinner, but some were making repairs to the house. One man was making what appeared to be a new door for a room in the house. The children were making curtains.

One of the children, a little boy, noticed me looking in. I was so embarrassed and almost ran away.... but he went to the window and opened it to talk to me. At the sound of the window opening, everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at me.

"What are you doing here, silly?" The little boy asked, smiling.

"I'm so sorry", I said. "I was just curious. What is this place?"

"It's my home for now", he said. "The kind man lets us live here. He said we could stay as long as we need to."

The man who was making a door spoke up. "We all help each other here, but we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. He has a good heart."

"Who is the kind man?" I asked, even though I already knew the answer..... he was the reason I was there in the first place.

The little boy smiled and pointed. "He's behind you", the boy whispered.

I turned around reluctantly, not looking forward to explaining myself. Instead, the familiar face of the man I loved warmed my heart, with a knowing grin. Suddenly the negative feelings and thoughts I had just vanished. All I felt was love and I started to cry.

"I'm so sorry", I said sobbing. "I shouldn't be here."

"I thought you would come", he said, smiling. "I've been expecting you."

He held out his hand, revealing a huge red juicy apple. I had never seen fruit look so amazing and beautiful.

"It's for you", he said.

"Thank you", I said, overwhelmed with gratitude. I took the apple and held it close to my heart.

He took my other hand, and we walked over to the front door. The little boy opened it for us.

"Welcome home", he said.
