Protection Spells and Rituals

Imagine that you have some shields. These shields are usually circular and vary from being a few inches wide to being several feet in diameter. You then place your shield over whichever part of your body you feel is most vulnerable. These shield can be decorated any way that you want with symbols that fit the purpose or just ones that you can relate to (five pointed star, cross, om, etc.)

People usually place their shields over that part of their body which feels most sensitive and often in accordance with the chakra system of Indian medicine. Some people use a shield made of mirror glass and they sense this shield actively reflecting whatever atmosphere is coming at them.

Bubbles of protection

The most well-known strategy of psychic protection is that of creating a protective bubble or egg around yourself. You imagine and sense yourself to be inside a bubble, and no unpleasant vibrations can penetrate it.

Get comfortable and relaxed. Earth yourself and guide your breath into a comfortable and relaxed rhythm. Imagine and sense that you are surrounded by a transparent protective bubble or egg, which protects you from negative vibrations. Spend a while sensing the bubble all around you. Sense that your own vibrations can exit through the membrane of the bubble. Sense that the bubble does not prevent good energies from coming in. Have a clear sense that unpleasant external energies cannot penetrate.

When you have made your bubble, exhale slowly and sense that your warm, moist breath carries your pure vibration--"essense of you"--into the bubble. Fill your bubble with your own vibration. Do this for several breaths.

Fill the bubble with different colors. At different times and different situations, you may find certain colors work better for you. Every color like every sound, has a different vibration. You can also fill the bubble with different protective images that resonate with you. Imagine particularly potent symbols, like the pentagram, outside of the bubble, thereby strengthening the membrane. Write slogans on the outside of the bubble, such as "Please keep out" or "Bad vibrations blocked".

Important reminder: Always make sure the bubble goes under your feet and up your back. And, be grounded and breathing correctly.

Over the course of time fill the bottle with thread snippets. These should be left over from sewing projects, they shouldn't be cut to order. An easy to do All Heal Spell

... to aid in the healing of all conditions, or to soothe the symptoms of serious illness.

Items needed:

2 Bowls warm water

Bless or empower the water as you see fit... I just pray to the God and Goddess and ask them to aid me in my healing, then I send as much personal energy as I can into the water. Lie upon the bare earth (if not possible, floor is OK). Have each hand in a separate bowl of warm water, arms stretched out to the sides.

Visualise roots sprouting from the base of your spine, going down into the earth. Breath deeply, and with each deep, slow inhalation, feel the roots burrow deeper into the earth. see a bright light at the center...see your roots penetrate it... now with each slow, deep breath, draw up the energy from this light into you.

See two streams of light begin to come from the sky, one stream into each bowl...feel the love of the God fill the bowl to your left, feel the love of the Goddess fill the bowl to the right.

Draw this love from the bows into your body through your hands. Collect the love energy from the bows and the energy from the earth into your heart, where your most personal energy is kept. Build all the energy here...until you can contain it no more.

When you can no longer contain the energy in your heart, release the energy to flood your entire body, and shout as loud as you can "HEAL ME!!!" at the same time as the release.

Continue to draw the energy for a while, letting it flow through your body, and spilling onto the ground...relax, and enjoy the peace that will settle over you.

After you have relaxed for a while, draw up your roots into your body, remove your hands from the water, and sit up. Take a sip from the bowl to your left, and thank the God for his love, then spill it at the base of a tree. Then take a sip from the bowl at your right, and thank the goddess for her love, then spill it upon the same tree. In the future, care for this has been blessed by the love of the gods (the water) and it will aid you in your health.

Healing a Friend or a Relative

Purple paper
White yarn or string
A pair scissors
Fresh violets (whole, with stems)
Black pen
A purple candle
A small vase or holder (for flowers)
This spell is for healing a friend or family member. It is best done when the moon is full, but you can do it whenever you feel it necessary.

Light the candle and fill the small vase with water. Place the freshly cut violets in the little vase and say a chant, focusing on the well-being of the person and the healing of their ailment.

Cut a heart out of the purple and write the name of the person on one side, and a short but heartfelt "Get Well!" message on the other side. Poke a small hole in the top right side of the heart and thread the white string through it, tie it, and attach it to the vase.

Give the little vase of violets to the target person and await their recovery.

Overcome Depression Spell

Tools you will need are:

It is best to find a work area that you can leave untouched for three days. If you must put away your tools, try to at least keep your spell candle out in the open. This spell is used to uplift your energy and overcome depression. Read over this spell and customize it prior to use-the work will go much smoother. Prepare your work area by setting up any tools you may use. While setting up your area, CONCENTRATE on the purpose of your work. Imagine how good it feels to be happy. Do not let negative thoughts enter your mind! Just prior to your work, bathe in purification herbs, or with your favorite bath salts. While you are bathing, concentrate again on the purpose of your spell. Again, do not let negative thoughts enter your mind. After bathing, go to your work area. Cast a circle and light your incense. Envision a large, yellow ball of light surrounding you and your work area. Hold the yellow candle between the palms of your hands and direct all of your positive energy into the candle. Place the candle in its candle holder. Prior to lighting the candle, say (either aloud, or to yourself): "This candle represents the love and energy I have for myself" Light the candle and say (either aloud or to yourself): "As I light this candle, the veil of darkness that is ever present in my mind is lifting. The darkness ceases to exist as the light of this flame glows. Long has the darkness filled my mind, my desire to be happy is intense like the heat of fire. As this candle burns, my spirits are lifting and the negative energy is washing away. I will be happy, my life will be peaceful. I can see myself as I wish to be-happy and free!" Sit back and watch the candle burn. Meditate on how good if feels to be happy and envision the veil of darkness lifting. When the candle had burned 1/3 of the way, say: "As the flame of the candle is extinguished-the light burns forever in my mind" and blow out the candle. Repeat this for two more nights. On the last night, after the candle has burned away and the leftover wax has cooled-throw away the leftover wax into to trash and envision your depression being thrown away with the wax. You will overcome your depression!

A Spell for Easing Grief or Sadness

Any memorabilia which tends to powerfully evoke the sadness: letters, pictures, gifts, ect.; and an object which reminds you of some upcoming event which is likely to bring you pleasure(it can be a holiday month in the future, for example), blankets or pillows

The Spell Sit while holding the memorabila, and allow the feelings to come freely. Say aloud why you are sad. It's okay to cry, yell, or pound. Find a key phrase that expresses your grief and say it out loud, over and over. Now visualize yourself being held closely in the Mother Goddess, who rocks and comforts you. Swathe yourself in the blankets and pillows, and rock gently back and forth as you feel Her warm embrace. After awhile, look at the memorabilia again, and recall that in the circle, all time is now. What you once had, you always have in your heart, as long as you don't shut it out. What you were given was real, and helped mold your life, and can never be taken away as long as you remember and cherish it. Remember the good times, and when you are ready, thank the Lady reminds that you had them. Now bring out the object that reminds you of the coming event: a visit to a favorite friend or relative, a special holiday, or a conference that should be exciting. Remind yourself that life goes on, that is still much to look forward to: this is only a tiny sample of the good times ahead for you. Ask Her to heal your pain. Open the circle, and go visit a friend.

Banishing & Binding Spells

Banishing and binding spells are a hot topic for ethical debates within the Wiccan community. Some believe these spells should not be done at all. There are however some situations that may warrant a banishing or binding spell:

1) You or a family member is being harassed or threatened by a person, group of people or even an entity of some kind.

2) A spell backfires and you need to undo something that was done unintentionally.

3) You own a piece of jewelry or other object that seems to be radiating negative energy to anyone who wears or comes in contact with it. The most famous case of this is of course the Hope Diamond.

4) To perhaps release someone who seems obsessed with someone or something.

The simplest banishment is to draw a pentacle in the opposite manner than normal. Meaning you would start at the bottom left side of the star and begin drawing upward away from you. This can be used to use to protect yourself from strange people. Put up a defensive shield, then make the sign of the banishing pentacle in front of me in the air, and push/throw it at the person with your hand. Envisioned the pentacle having a burst of white light behind it. So when we talk about banishment, it doesn't always have to be an involved process. It can be that easy. Another banishment that is simple and effective if someone is making your daily life miserable, is what can be called iron binding. Place something of the person, a gift they may have given you, or something that you associate with them, inside a small iron cauldron, on your altar. As you do this, simply say something like "Name of person (or sigil of name), I am putting up an iron wall between me and thee. No more will you upset me. No more be done, So Mote It be" The only problem with this type of spell is that you have to leave the item in the cauldron, for once it is removed the spell is broken. So if you need to use it for someone you never want to have any contact with again, you would have to bury the cauldron with the item in it, or perhaps burn the item in the cauldron to finalize the spell. But if you just want a break from someone at work, who is making you miserable, then it works well.

Banishing Spell

To be performed during the waning moon. The purpose of this spell is to rid yourself of negative influences. If you feel someone is exerting negative energy, you can banish that energy with a spell similar to this one.
Tools needed:
heatproof container or cauldron
black or white candle
basil or garlic (for uncrossing, protection)
paper, and a black pen

Cast the circle Invoke the Gods and Goddesses that you usually call upon to assist you

Statement of Purpose: I am here to banish negative influences from my life. Right now, (name) is exerting an extremely negative force upon me. I ask for the God and Goddess to assist me in banishing these forces and eliminating his/her destructiveness.

Consecrate the cauldron as follows:
Sprinkle with salt water and recite: "In the name of the Lord and Lady, I charge you to serve me within this circle. I clear you of all former influences and energies that you may be fit for the workings of magick again."
Do the same with the candle.
On a piece of paper, write the full name of the person to be banished. Roll it up and tie it with a black string. Sprinkle with salt water and recite: "Thou creature of paper, by paper made by paper changed. Thou art not paper, but negative influences in (name). So mote it be!"
Light the black candle.
Burn the paper in the candle, visualizing all negative power over you vanishing in the flames and rising out of your world with the smoke.
Sprinkle basil and garlic over the flames and recite: "Blazing force of cleansing fire, help me in this rite. By air and earth, water and fire, so be you bound with this rite! Your power takes flight Sky and sea, keep harm from me. Cord go round, power be bound, your negativity will no longer come my way. From henceforth, your power over me is banished. So mote it be!"
Let the paper burn itself out while you visualize a healthy, positive relationship with the person.
Cakes and ale (eating bread or drinking wine or juice to restore energy spent during ritual).
Thank the God and Goddess.
Release the circle.

Freezer Binding

This is best done after the full moon, or at least when the moon is waning. The binding should also be renewed every month when the person starts bothering you again.

Write the name of the person you wish to prevent from harming you on a piece of paper, gaze at the paper, and visualize the face of the person in question. See their face vividly imprinted on the paper. Then, fold the paper three times. Tie it up with black thread or string, and put into a small watertight container (baby food jars are ideal). Fill the container with water, and place in a nook of the freezer where its likely to be undisturbed, saying: "stay there and freeze for as long as I please."

* A word of caution: I am sure that if your heart is in the right place as a practicing Witch, I do not have to tell you not to control the will of others. Please make sure before doing either of the above spells that you have exhausted all possibilities for getting the person to stop harming you. Perform these spells as a last resort, and not to bind the person themselves, but their negative influence over you.

Possession/Obsession Breaking

Normally we a sprinkle salt and water for protective ritual work but when there are indications of attempts to possess, stronger measures are necessary. First make the following sprinkling solution:

4 oz water
2 T salt
1 T bay laurel
4 0z vinegar
1 T basil
1 t jallop

T=tablespoon t=teaspoon

Make two batches of the solution, divide the first batch into 2 parts and put into small glasses one goes at the front door and the other at the rear. Take the second batch to your altar, and use it at the end of a basic protection ritual, sprinkle the altar area and if you feel the need the whole house as you sprinkle chant:

Mighty Power of this brew
Exorcise all spirits who
Would haunt, obsess or me possess
Send them to a place of rest
Banish all who would take control
Take them to a place of old
Where they must see the Light,
And evermore to do what's right.
Haunting ones from here must go,
Or be burned! I say it so!
Harken to this word from me!
As my will!

A Spell for Banishing Depression

You will need:
Goddess candle---White, once at center of the altar, or two at the back.
Banishing Candle---Black, placed at the left front of the altar.
Invoking Candle---Pink or red, placed at the right of the altar.
Incense---Sage, cedar, rosemary or pine at the beginning of the ritual, changed later to rose or amber. Burn loose herbs on charcoal blocks to do this.
Oils---Use Goddess or Altar oil on the Goddess candle; sage, pine or other banishing oil on the banishing candle; and rose oil on the invoking candle and for self-blessing.
Symbol Objects---Use a black gemstone for banishing, and a piece of rose quartz
or a rose quartz pendant for invoking. Place the pendant on the altar and put it on before doing the self-blessing.
Matches to light candles and incense, charcoal blocks for loose incense, ritual wand (if used) to cast the circle.

Ritual Outline
Light candles---"Dress" the candles with the oils, working base to tip, (away from you) for the banishing candle and tip to base (towards you) for the invoking candle and the Goddess candles. Visualize the intent, banishing depression when handling the banishing candle, and invoking joy and self-love while "dressing" the Goddess and invoking candles. Light only the Goddess candles at this time.

Purify---Start the charcoal block and give it time to heat up. Sprinkle loose herbs of sage, cedar, rosemary or pine on the hot coal and use the smoke for purifing. Visualize the intent of the ritual, at this point visualize banishing depression and emotional pain, while smudging with the smoke. Then light the black candle from the Goddess candle.

Cast circle/invoke a Crone Goddess or Goddesses to help in banishing, and a Goddess of gentleness and peace for the invoking part of the ritual. Try Kali the Destroyer or Hecate for banishing, and Kwan Yin for gentleness and invoking. Use Goddesses for the five elements or these two aspects only, or whatever feels right. do a full casting and invoking to make the circle, or as informal invitation to the aspects and elements.

Invocation---Dear mothers of wisdom and grace, I invite you here to ask your help. I refuse my depression and choose to banish it, and ask instead for joy and peace of mind. Help me in my work tonight, Kali and Kwan Yin.

Body of ritual----Focus on the flame of the black candle, thinking of all the things that need changing. Remember fully all the reasons for depression and pain, acknowledge all your anger, all your rage, and all your fear. Dwell on every hurt, every feeling, every negativity. When you have focused them all onto the candle, shout "NO!" and blow the candle out in a decisive, quick motion. Watch the smoke rise from the extinguished candle, and feel all the negativity dissolving in the rising air. Breathe the banishing incense for awhile.

Now lighting the invoking candle. Do it from the Goddess candle, and sprinkle rose incense on the charcoal block. Let the light of the pink candle and the fragrance of the rose incense fill you as you watch and breathe them. Breathe the energies in deeply, remembering the qualities of Kwan Yin, or other Goddesses of mercy invoked in the ritual. Ask Kwan Yin for her presence and help.

Focus on the candle flame and think of all the good things in your life. Refill each banished item and negativity with some positive attribute; where there was pain before, replace it with love. For every wrong remember something to give thanks for; for every pain remember something joyfull. Remember your accomplishments in life, how good a woman you really are. Do a series of affirmations, "I am" or "I have", to list your good qualities and the qualities you choose to become or gain. Continue stating the positives and affirmations untill you feel filled with pink light and the scent of roses.

Self-blessing---Put on the rose quartz pendant or hold the rose quartz stone. Do the self-blessing ritual slowly and lovingly, anointing your chakras with the rose oil. Breathe the scent deeply and draw it into your body, emotions, mind and spirit.

Thank Kwan Yin for your joy and Kali for her energy of change.

Open circle/ground.

Allow the pink candle to burn out itself, or extinguish and relight it nightly untill at least the next Full Moon. Do affirmations nightly with the flame. Continue burning pink candles for as long as needed to remind you of new joy and positivity. Repeat the ritual on the next wanning moon if needed; it will be needed less each time you do it. Each time, bury the remains of the black candle in the earth, along with the ashes from the incense; visualize your pain being buried and recycled with them. Repeat the self-blessing at any time, and do it often, at least every New and Full Moon. Continue wearing the rose quartz pendant, or carry a piece of the stone with you at all times. Remember you are Goddess.

Do banishing rituals on the waning or dark moons. The day of Saturn (Saturday)is a good day to enter the labyrinth/unknown to change habits.

Protection Charm

One red candle + one white candle
A small piece of white paper
Ink pen
Red Ribbon

Set the white candle alight on the left to represent the Goddess and a red candle to the right to represent the God. Place the materials for the spell between the two candles.

Using the oil, with your right index finger, draw a pentacle (star inside a circle) in the middle of the white paper, while saying, "With the seal of this pentagram I request that this charm be used for protection." [Editor's note: a pentagram seal may also be used.]

Using a pen, in the center of the oil-drawn pentagram, draw your own special symbol for protection. Say, "With this rune, I request that this charm be used for protection."

When you are ready, roll the paper up with the red ribbon tightly lengthwise.

Hold the charm over the red candle and say,
I consecrate myself in fire
so that I can defend myself
and protect myself with the power I have.

Continue doing this with the smoke of the white candle, but consecrate it in the name of air.

Hold the charm with both hands. Concentrate on the charm's task. Then seal the left end of the charm with white wax, the right with red wax. The charm is now complete.

How to make the oil yourself:
1 T base oil
4 drops primrose oil
4 drops lavender oil
2 drops sandalwood oil

Of course, you can always use whatever you feel will do the job.

Protection Charm #2

Fill a clear glass goblet about halfway up with water. Stir in a little salt and put it in direct sun for approximately 15 minutes. Let the water absorb the rays. Along side the goblet, place a charm or talisman on a chain or cord and allow it to receive the sun as well. (Note: You may use a piece of jewelry such as a gemstone pendant or a stone you've found or any other natural object for the charm.)

After 15 minutes have passed, take the glass and talisman out of the sun and dip the talisman into the water. Using the chain or the string attached to the talisman, gently swirl it clockwise while you say the following three times.

Apollo's light surround me.
Poseidon's water protect me.
Athena's wisdom guide me.

As you speak the words, imagine a beam of pure white light surrounding both the water and the talisman.

Leave the water with the talisman in it for another 10 minutes, then dry it off and wear it with comfort in knowing that it will protect you.

Pet Protection

I used these spells in a protection ritual for a house and its inhabitants, including the pets. In both spells, Hecate is called upon for her fierce protective attributes. I've explained the circumstances in each case, but you would want to make changes to fit the circumstances and characteristics of your pets.

To protect a dog:
The dog I wanted to protect is a beautiful, loving pet. He is also a pitbull and very protective of his family. My fear has always been that he would protect them from intruders or other harm and later be harmed himself because of the fear many people have of the breed.

Call your dog into the circle and draw a pentagram in Protection Oil on his forehead. Then recite:

Hecate, Dark Mother
In protecting this home
In your place as is right
Stands one of your own

In defending this house
And all creatures within
Your sacred beast
Is your true loyal friend.

Keep him from harm
As he guards all he loves
And watch over him
So below, as above.

To protect a cat>
The cat in this case was a house cat who had just moved into a new house. He kept running away every time a door or window was opened.

Call your cat into the circle and draw a pentagram in Protection Oil on his forehead. Then recite:

Moon Goddess, I ask
That you keep [name] at home
And safe from his mischief
And desire to roam.

Give him the contentment
Known to his race
And see that he's happy
In this his new place.

The Bottle Spell

(variation of the traditional witch's bottle)

This spell can be used to neutralize the power of those who intend to hurt your reputation, in any way pose a threat to your security, or who want to do you physical harm.

black thread
black ink or black ballpoint pen
parchment paper
1 bottle with a cork or mortar and pestle
1 white candle
4 tablespoons orris-root (or oak moss)
4 tablespoons sea salt
4 tablespoons black powdered iron (available at pottery shops where ironstone is made)
4 tablespoons frankincense or myrrh

Mix the sea salt, orris-root powder, and iron in a bowl. Then cut a peice of parchment to fit inside your bottle and write on it in black ink:

I neutralize the power of [name of your adversary] to do me any harm.
I ask that this be correct and for the good of all. So mote it be.

Roll up the parchment, tie it with black thread to bind it, and place it in the bottle. Fill the bottle with the dry ingedients. Then take the white candle and, while turning the bottle counterclockwise, drip drip wax over the cok to seal it. Last, secretly bury the bottle in a place where it will not be disturbed and no animal or person will dig it up. It should never be opened or the power of the spell is lost.
